To provide some royal color, I painted his epaulets purple and his cloak a silvery sky-blue. His greaves, gauntelts, and boots are bronze, as is the rim of his shield (the center is steel). Thorgrim's beard looked nice using metallic bronze on top of brown, but the King of the Mountain doesn't have a lot of hair so it was easier to just use bronze alone. It may be shinier than is appropriate, but I find it regal, especially his majestic eyebrows.
I did eventually decide that the cloak was too bright, and that even the King has only a grey cloak. I think the contrast is more stark this way, just grey and brass and the purple epaulets for color. The center image below has the grey cloak, bracketed by images with the blue cloak - you can decide for yourself if the change is for the better. I reinforced the rents in the cloak with flat black and then layered black and gray on the folds and creases. I like the effect from a distance, although up close it appears somewhat exaggerated.
I must have been feeling adventurous because I mixed a very thin wash of black and applied it to the figure so that the outline of the King's form was shadowed (the sculpt is very blocky and the interface of surfaces is not realistic). It looked good, but the effect was insufficient for the trouble. I'm not sure if a less watery wash would improve the effect or just stick to the surface. I may try that now with an unpainted piece... Finally I painted the base purple to match the aforementioned Drow friend. I'll probably lacquer him tomorrow and then put him up for display. All hail the King!
