Week 22: June 2 - June 8, 2014
Games: On Sunday, S1 and I played Curse of Undeath, which is another game in the Dungeon Command series (like Blood of Gruumsh). I've had it sitting unopened for quite awhile, but S1 and I got it out before they left for a vacation trip. I like the figures more than the ones for Cormyr and Lolth, although they are not painted as nicely as the Gruumsh figures. The map and cards were otherwise par for the course. S1 had as leader a character with a mini-cower power for his figures, which I thought was pretty powerful. My leader gained a point of leadership whenever an opposing figure was killed, which is a poor power for a split game because with only 6 figures there aren't many death opportunites (and the leadership score started low to compensate for this ability). I still pulled off a narrow victory by cornering his dracolich and getting him to cower to the point where he couldn't survive the loss of the piece. I tried to explain that even though it was his big hitter, it had already done its job and he should let it go, but he paid too much to keep it alive.
DVDs: Watched The Conjuring on Friday night. It's a good horror flick about demonic possession (again, supposedly based on a true story, but we've heard THAT too many times...) I've found that horrible monsters jumping out of the dark has become passe, but seeing a ghostly hand appear out of the darkness is my new scare factor (IMO, that was undoubtedly the scariest part of the original House on Haunted Hill, starring Vincent Price - an supposed apparition glides across the floor as the protagonists explore the house.) The tension really built throughout the movie, and there were a lot of cheap scares that the director skipped - I would expect a scare scene, nothing would happen, and the tension would continue to mount. My only complaint was that the movie made explicit a difference between ghosts and demons, but the possessing spirit seemed to vary in description between the two. The movie also had a happy ending, when I really expected an ironic twist at multiple points leading to a worse outcome. This is one that I will try to get my wife to watch with me sometime.
