Week 23: June 9 - June 15, 2014
Books:Continuing reading Planes of Conflict. I like how there is a separate book for the neutral planes of good and the neutral planes of evil.. It is more reading for me but the extra detail is worth the extra price. Since I'm not intending to play AD&D 2e, the backstory and setting is the whole value for me.
Games: S1 and D1 played some LEGO games with me before they left for their trip. We put together Ilrion and Draida for one game and Ilrion and Fortaan for another. The LEGO board games have tracks and terrain built from legos and minifigs that represent high-fantasy characters and monsters. You roll a six-sided lego die with swords, skulls and emblems indicating movement and attack power. It's fun for their age and skill, and doesn't require any tactical thinking, just roll-and-move. Of course, the kids want to disassemble and reassmemble the modules, and that's stressful to me (you're taking it apart!), but with some self-control I can manage.
DVDs: Since I didn't get any gaming in while the kids were gone, I watched a number of scary movies instead. I've had the Masters of Horror Season 1 set for awhile and haven't seen any of the movies since the last time the family went on a trip without me. This is a series of original mini-movies produced by famous horror movie directors. I've found them to largely be very good, maybe a little disturbing but not too scary. I saw "Dance of the Dead" and "Chocolate"; the former was advertised as by Richard Matheson, whom I thought to be The Richard Matheson, but it was his son Richard Christian Matheson. The last time I visited with my sister we discussed what were the scariest movies we had seen. She thought the remake of Evil Dead fit that category. So, based on her recommendation I bought and watched it. Throughout most of the movie I was thinking, "Really? She likes this?" Then when you think that the character is going to escape and he dies, I thought "Really? She like this?" Then, when you think the movie is going to end (again!) and the sky starts to rain blood (like, ridiculous, STUPID, amounts of blood) I thought "Okay, this IS a Sam Raimi film - reminded me of one of his movies where a stuffed-shirt Englishman kills zombies by holding up a lawnmower. Also, Bruce Campbell makes a cameo appearance. It was probably worth the $5 I paid, but it wasn't scary. Squicky, yes, although there's only so much sharp-metal-into-flesh one can see and still feel anything. By the end I just rolled my eyes. SO, I am going to rib her over this pick when I see her next.
